Takeaways Near Schools

Hot-food takeaway exclusion zones around schools, for any council in England · by @ET

Loads the schools and takeaways for the council covering that place.

About

  • Many councils refuse new hot-food takeaways within a set distance of schools, often 400 m. The London Plan asks boroughs to consider this within 400 m walking distance of primary and secondary schools. Check your council's local plan for its exact rule.
  • Distances here are straight-line. Walking distance is usually longer, so this shows the widest possible zone.
  • Schools: open schools from the Department for Education's register, via planning.data.gov.uk. Phase (primary, secondary…) is worked out from the school type and name, so some are marked "phase unclear". Schools just over the council boundary aren't included.
  • Takeaways: Food Standards Agency food hygiene data, businesses registered as "Takeaway/sandwich shop", plus restaurants and cafés whose names suggest hot food to take away (many chicken, kebab and pizza shops are registered that way). This includes sandwich shops and isn't the same as the planning use class for hot-food takeaways. Takeaways just over the council boundary are included when they're near a school.
