About
Where: each city's urban centre, defined the same way everywhere (the UN and Eurostat "Degree of Urbanisation": contiguous 1 km² cells with at least 1,500 people). Administrative boundaries differ too much to compare cities fairly.
Who: people per 100 m cell from the EU's Global Human Settlement Layer (2025). Hospitals: emergency departments from Eurostat's healthcare register (national health ministries and statistics offices), and from OpenStreetMap for London. Hospitals up to 8 km outside the urban centre count.
How: drive times along OpenStreetMap roads at typical free-flow urban speeds, the same for every city, respecting one-way streets and lower posted limits. "Busy" makes every journey 50% longer. Ambulances on blue lights can be faster; rush hour can be slower. These are journeys to hospital, not ambulance response times.
