Powered-two-wheelers and smart cities: the case of variable message signs
Do motorcyclists and scooter riders in Athens change route when the variable message signs report an incident? We surveyed 105 riders and used probit models. The type of incident (roadworks most of all) and how serious it was affected whether riders diverted, but suggested alternative routes didn’t. Riders found the signs useful but felt they weren’t designed for them, and 36% wanted travel times based on how two-wheelers move through traffic.
